The different types of Governors:

Governors do a very important job making sure we bring out the best in everyone. They both support and challenge the school team to ensure we are doing the best job we can to help pupils be safe, happy and reach their potential.

Parent governors are elected by the parents and carers of school pupils - Greenwood currently has 5 parent governors.

Co-Opted governors are appointed by the governing body to represent the community interests. The definition of co-opted governor is wide.  These governors are appointed by the governing body to represent education and community interests. Co-opted governors can be people who live or work in the community served by the school, or people who do not work in or live close to the school but are committed to the good governance and success of the school. They can also be staff governors - Greenwood currently has 5 Co-Opted Governors.

A Staff governor is elected by fellow members of staff and the Head Teacher of the school - Greenwood currently has 1 Staff governor.

The Head Teacher,  Mrs Kim Harvey, is by her position automatically elected to a position on the governing body.

All the governors except the staff governors are volunteers.  It may also be pertinent to note that of all our Governors six have or have had children attend our school.

There are currently two vacancies for Co-Opted Governors.

 The Governing Body and it’s role:

School governors are drawn from different parts of the community and can be parents and staff or from the community and other groups. This helps ensure the governing body has sufficient diversity of views and experience but does not mean governors of a particular category represent that group on the governing body. For example, parent governors do not represent the parents at the school and do not report back to them.

Key Roles:

  • To ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  • To hold the Head Teacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its staff, and the performance management of staff;
  • To oversee the financial performance of the school and to ensure its money is well spent.

Other important duties but not limited to:

  • Determining how the school's budget is spent;
  • The appointing of new staff;
  • Hearing appeals and grievances;
  • Forming policy on the schools curriculum;
  • Setting and agreeing on the school's standard for behaviour;
  • Making sure the school buildings are welcoming and safe;
  • Setting and monitoring the school's aims and policies.
